There used to be and may still be lots of cool mods to the TS930S available
from Inrad. I have:
* tuning rate mod--a little board. Responds to rate of turning the big knob!
Turn the knob fast, and kHz/turn goes up, slow down, and it slows down.
Selectable rated. Very effective.
* memories mod--a few cut traces and added wires. Doubles the number of
frequency memories
* main VFO lock--allows locking of the A frequency. Very useful for split
pileups.
I still have this TS930S. It never had the legendary digital board
throughole problem. I had intended to add the PIEXX mod, but never did, and
probably never will. Anyone want to buy it?

JT: First choice for me would be a Kenwood TS830S with remote VFO, and
second but about equal choice is the Kenwood TS930S. The 830 you can fix
easily while the 930 is getting long in the tooth. 930 as much slower
tuning rate than the 830, but that can be fixed with a 6 to 1 or 10 to1
Jackson reduction drive on the remote vfo, giving you sloooow and fast
tuning rates. Lots of 830's still on the air doing a terrific job. You
should have some money left over from your $1k, or buy a second as a spare
and blow the entire $1k. Good luck. 73 bob de w9ge PS as others have
mentioned Ten Tec Corsair II and remote vfo also a good choice, and has
terrific qsk.
