Tom. You might look into the archives of the "Old Old Timers Club". About ten years ago their journal had the first-hand account of a young man monitoring the effort of Major Squiers to use trees as antennas at the Presidio in SF before WW=I. As I recall the effort was a failure but Squiers did not give up; he went on to become the Commanding Officer of the U.S. Signal Corps while the young man went on to be the CEO of IT&T.
