I just got mine, so I can't report on longevity in the California

These things aren't cheap.

I had a 33ft MFJ pole up for 3 years in Laguna Beach most of the year - the
salt air and hot sun faded the black coating but otherwise it was sound. When
I brought it back here to NNJ after the first winter a section fractured
slightly -- I was able to glob on some expoxy and later lots of tape which
sealed
it some but then another section fractured well beyond repair. You're right
- these poles aren't cheap but they can be very convenient some
applications.
