The size of your concrete base may depend more on the skill, or lack of, of your backhoe operator than on what size base you wish to have. At my very remote QTH, the one and only backhoe operator for 25 miles was told to dig a hole 3' X 3' X 8'. Due to the size of the bucket, and an over zealous operator, the hole turned out to be 4' X 5' X 8'. You can't talk precision when dealing with large earth moving equipment!
