Perhaps a better statement would be that a more sophisticated antenna system
design might be required to work with 200 feet rather than 300 feet on 160.
I assume we're talking about TX performance here, and specifically, the
advantage in terms of low angle radiation? (if it was simply that you get
less "near field ground loss", there are other approaches to getting there
(stacking being but one))
And, if you're talking about low angle radiation with high antennas, you're
really more concerned with soil properties a LONG way away from the antenna
(that 300 ft tower, at a 10 degree takeoff angle, is bouncing signals off
the ground some 6000 ft away)
I'd suggest that for a fixed dollar amount, a single high tower will
probably beat a raft of lower towers, but if you were totally cost
unconstrained, I should think that some sort of multi bay curtain array of
yagis might be pretty impressive, particularly in combination with a fair
amount of work at creating a suitable ground plane.
It may well be that in Keith's case and physical environment, there wouldn't
be a significant improvement from 200 to 300 ft, while in Matt's case there
is.
