One thing that happened on mine was that the insulator that holds the straps
that connect the two driven elements together decomposed and the straps,
which cross over each other, would periodically short out or short to the
boom.

I believe that if the problem was with the balun, the SWR would be an issue
on all bands. Having messed with with KLMs and specifically the KT34XA for
years, my guess is one or both of the DRIVEN elements has a
problem...shorted
cap tube ( dust, dirt, spider web, piece of metal) or something not making
contact.
Did the SWR on 20 change or has it always been 1:6?
