The "cross dipole" is similar to the so called "gapless antenna" used by the
military for communications out to about 300 miles.
As I recall the antenna was matched using an automatic antenna tuner at the
apex (Collins design) or at the base (Chu design). This allowed operation
over a very large band - almost approaching an octave. The Marines and the
Airforce had versions. Sorry I do not recall the nomenclature -- the systems
using them included TAOC-85.
