Before I retired in January I used to work for the FAA. My work involved
traveling at one time or another to all 20 of the Air Route Traffic Control
Centers, or ARTCC's as we called them. The log periodic was used in an
emergency communication network. There is an RF proofed room in the
basement that has some HF gear in it Collin's equipment If I remember right,
with a 1 kw amp. The antenna is rotatable of course. I've made a few
contact's from the stations. Odd thing is there not at every ARTCC, I would
say maybe 15 of the 20 sites have one. I don't think there used much
anymore, I think it was a cold war thing, for communication in case of a
nuclear war. All ARTCC's were built in the late 60's, and at least 25 miles
from ground zero of a large city. They are also bomb proof. I never did find
anyone who actually had responsibly for the stations maintenance. It was
usually a ham that worked in the building who kept it working. mostly for
his own use. I think it was officially replaced by a satellite phone
system, but still kept as a backup. I was told that there used to be a
weekly net. I might be able to find a picture of the station if I do I will
put it on my web site and let everyone know here.
