zinc-rich primer... same stuff I use on steel. It'

Thanks for the heads up on the chromate family of primers.
I don't need a lot right now so I guess I'll peruse the paint stores and
see what they have. We have a wholesaler here that stocks just about
everything automotive, commercial, and industrial that will whine about the
Small quantity I want but will sell it to me anyway.

I haven't seen it in quite a few years - the chromate part doomed it. It was
replaced by zinc phosphate, which is pretty good primer, but even it is
getting difficult to find, around here anyway. Automotive paint stores (and
probably others) sell etching primers that seem to work pretty good on
aluminum. Don't know what's in them, but they are not particularly cheap.
