I say put up the beam!!

Nothing wrong with hose clamps and electrical tape.  Clean the joints
(scotch brite - NOT steel wool) and maybe add NoAlOx, then new SS clamps and
real electrical tape (3M 88) where necessary - the beam could last years!

It should CRUSH the vertical.
