In my opinion, if the HL is so old or worn or both that you can no longer
read the stamping on the outer jacket, I would pass on it unless a direct
loss inspection can be made and also cutting backa couple of feet from each
end and inspecting the solid dielectric and the copper outer jacket. Both
should look nice and white and the copper shiny. I have HL that is 30 years
old and that's still what it looks like if you cut it back a couple of feet.

Thanks Ed.

This length of line has been in my possession for going on 30 years, unused and stored indoors. It was only in service for a few years before I took the repeater out of service and brought it home.

Its been sitting in storage, and came across it while doing some very late spring cleaning this past weekend. I removed the connector from one end and the dielectric looks very good. The center pin of the Type N male connector is soldered on. The outside surface of the helical outer conductor is dark, but not green.

I have the tools to measure its performance. I'll do that before I seriously consider putting it into service. I'd have to decoil it to get a length measurement as well. But at present I don't have an application for it.
