 Just some comments to some email posts, with all due respect. Spline
balls and porcupines are the same thing and very commonly used here in
Florida by power, telephone companies, etc.
 As far as chimneys being made taller targets due to ionized gasses,
making them more suseptable to lightning strikes, what about the ones
being hit while emitting nothing? it's a lack of proper grounding which
allows excessive static charge buildup to initiate a skyward moving
leader. 
 Also it's high velocity rocket motion through suspended cloud droplets
of ice and water that triggers the lightning discharge, not ionized
exhaust.
