Easier to make a clean DC Power supply, and besides, I think I've said I do 
have a machine shop - hence the sig below ;)

Oh, and you can instant reverse a 3 phase motor without waiting for it to spin 
down below the starter switch speed like you do on a single phase motor (oh, 
and a 3 phase motor runs smoother - proof?  Take a surface grinder, and look at 
the surface finish you'll get with a 1 phase and a 3 phase motor)
