I rented a little excavator that had movable treads (it might've been a
Bobcat). They retracted to around 48" I think - it was enough to drive it
through the gate in the fence anyway - and then extended a foot or so for the
needed stable platform when we got back to the digging site.
Also, you're in California - hire some Mexicans. There are always lots
hanging around your local hardware store/lumber yard and are willing to work.
The latest I paid was $12 per hour in Santa Cruz. Cheaper than Labor Ready, et
al.
