Ted,
I have three 100-ft towers amidst woods of mixed hardwoods and pines that
are 70-80 feet tall. One of these is a series-fed tower for 160 meters in a
grove of 20 or so loblolly pines that are 45-50 feet tall. While the other
two towers have monoband yagis at the top, they also have lower antennas at
or below the tree line (4-el 15m yagi at 50 feet, 5-el 10m yagi at 55 feet,
4-el 20m yagi at 70 feet, and a 3-el 40m HyGain yagi at 82 feet. I also
have a 5-el 10m yagi fixed south at 16 feet, mounted on a loblolly pine tree.
The 15m and 20m yagis are part of a stack, but work well either in the
stack or the lower antenna alone -- depending on the dominant wave angle of
propagation. All of the antennas seem quite competitive and do not seem to
suffer any problems from the trees (other than occassionally snagging a
limb that has grown too close).
In addition I have a dozen or so Beverage receiving antennas around my 12
acres of woods and all seem to hear quite well.
