An inexpensive tuner that works super well is the modified Z-MATCH that is in PRACTICAL WIRE ANTENNAS by Heys (figure 90). It uses fixed coils and works like a champ. Works almost as well as my Johnson Matchbox. You can generally pick up a quality tuner at ham swap meet for under $100.
