I checked on pole prices a few years ago, and they were much cheaper than
you anticipated. 
A 90 foot, Class 3 (very heavy grade pole) was less than $900.00
fob the Portland shipping docks.

Check with Cascade in Oregon and I'll bet you'll be surprised. I'm
sure prices have gone up since I checked, but bet they are still
considerably less than a comparible tower.
