Guy [k2av] clearly believes, from his technical studies and practical
experience, that all of the various antennas [ dipoles, quads, several
different tri-band configurations] tested have the exact same pattern
shapes. In addition he believes all of them [including the reference
dipole ] are identically effected by "objects",[ backscatter,
re-radiation etc in both the near and far fields] and hense comparitive
measurements [ to a dipole and hense each other ] are as valid as they
would be if made in free space[ and perhaps to the same accuracy ]. His
experience also indicates measurements made in the lobe null area does
not impact accuracy or repeatability and should be as valid as those run
at the lobe maximum. I would like to be able to accept these positions
and I hope he will provide more technical support for them. If they are
true the technical arguements can be made,[ and they will certainly be
accepted by any resonable person if presented with scientific based data
], --- then the long desired solution to accurately testing hf antennas
is in hand and could be implimented almost overnight with out any great
investment in equipment or real estate. In fact the ARRL could use one
of their towers , and that of any near by ham, to make tests of antennas
for their advertisers [ as they do with hf radios etc ] on a routine
basis. The cost to do so would be almost nil [ and might be off-set by
performing commerical development testing for various manufactures and
experimenters]. I think we should encourage Guy to expand on these
facts, because if accepted, we have a break-through solution to a long
standing "problem" that has inhibited antenna development efforts and
logical antenna selections. We would be greatly in his debt Larry
