Jerry,
When I was in my condo with a 25' wide attic I made a 40 meter dipole in
the following manner:
1. Two 12' pieces of copper pipe (well actually each 12' piece was
a 10' piece and 2' but you get the picture).
2. At the end of each piece I made a wooden frame the shape of an
'X' from 1" x 2" wood. Each piece was about 2' long but could probably
be made smaller. I then put screws into the wood in such a way that as
I wrapped the wire around the screws it formed a spiral on the 'X' wood
frame. This isn't very clear, I didn't wrap the wire around the screw
heads, I simply used the screw heads as an "anchor or post" to hold the
wire as I wrapped it in a spiral on the frame. Let's try one more time
...each leg of the 'X' had 4 or 5 screws in it and they were positioned
in such a manner that as you wrapped the wire around the frame using the
screws as anchors the wire formed a spiral. This is a case where a
picture is worth a thousand words!
For your case, you would use wire instead of copper pipe and since you
were talking about bringing the wire down to the fence, perhaps mounting
the 'X' frame would not be a real problem. Also, I would recommend
using insulated wire in whatever antenna configuration you build since
the it sounds like the ends of the antenna will be at a level where
they might come in contact with fellow life forms! Of course for 80m
you would make the "horizontal or slanted" part of the antenna as long
as you possibly could.
This antenna performed much better then I ever imagined mounted in my
attic @ 30' high (at the most). I also got it to work on 80m by
building an additional 'X' frame on each end with another spiral and I
would go up in the attic and wire in the 2nd set of 'X' frames in series
with the first set to operate 80m Needless to say, it didn't work
nearly as well on 80m, but it DID work!
