The Oakum that I had to use, was used to fill holes and chinks in wooden
row boats. Every spring before putting the dried out boat into the
water. Chink with oakum, then fill the boat with water, find some more
holes and chink again. The last time just leave the water in to hlep swell
the wood.
Messy stuff but worked.
