I agree that WD-40 is not a lubricant for a long time. However, I found
that the 3-in-1 types of oils tend to solidify over a period of time, and,
as you say messy. In a punch I would recommend the trial use of a teflon
or a silicon type lubicant. Inert and lasts for awhile.
