It's a tower, but not for hams..

Riding the bus from Nara to the airport last week near Osaka, Japan, I 
saw several large vertical antennas.. lots of guy wires with insulators, 
big capacity hat, base of antenna in a wet swamp (being used as a giant 
water trap for one of those multitier driving ranges), large diameter 
feedline from large (2m diameter) feedthrough in the doghouse next to 
it, etc.  Hard to estimate size (zooming by on the bus) but certainly 
over 100m.

Seemingly an enormous number of guys (yes, they get typhoons there 
sometimes, but this was a LOT of guys).

Just curious if anyone knows what they're for. (At least one is operated 
by NHK).  LF/MF broadcast? Beacons?
