So does a plain old hand held hacksaw when it comes to 25G. It's very 
easy to cut.
I've made base sections out of solid rod and steel plate, pipe and steel 
plate, and just short sections of tower.  I prefer the solid rod. It may 
be heavy, but you never have to worry about drainage or freezing.

OTOH the base does not *have* to be 5', it can be 6, 7, 8...what ever is 
handy.
