If you only have a couple of runs then it can be problematic. OTOH I
have 5 runs from the shop and house to a relay box at the base of the
tower and 5 runs to the top of the tower. Counting pigtails and bulkhead
connectors at the top and bottom of the tower that is roughly 10
connectors per run for a total of 50. Add another 8 from the 6 pack to
the rigs in the shop, about a dozen in each station for another 24 and
I'm looking at roughly 80 connectors.
BUT even for a couple of runs to a couple thousand dollars worth of
antennas and a $1500 to $3000 rig and the $50 to $100 for the crimping
tool is a good investment.
Crimped connectors are much stronger mechanically than the clamp or
solder type. If you have more than a couple they are much faster to make.
It's not always necessary to purchase a crimping tool. If there are
many hams in an area it's likely that some of them already have the
crimping tools. They may not want to loan them out, but many will come
over and help install connectors. The crimping tools might make a good
club investment too, particularly for FD.
