Need some advise on getting the best performance out of a multi-band (80 through 20) wire antenna and tuner.

The best performing horizontal antenna, by far, would be a fan dipole with one element per band, fed with coax. You get a predictable pattern, the antennas are close to resonance on each band, so don't need heroic efforts to match them to your rig, and they are cheap and easy to build.

See the tutorials about "Antennas For Limited Space" at k9yc.com/publish.htm On the same webpage, there's a new Power Point that I presented for the first time tonight to the Palo Alto club about how to decide between a vertical or horizontal for YOUR QTH, based on ground conditions, availability of skyhooks, your budget, and what you want to work.
