I don't care for the Budwig with it's heavy rod connections. I found
it difficult to get reliable connections to the legs of the antenna
that don't break. My recent wires have used the Jetstream center
insulators from R and L Electronics:

They're fairly robust and I suspect would even take the stress of being
strung between a couple tall trees (although my wires are all hung as
inverted Vs).

The Budwig HQ-1 does not appear to be very robust but it did seem to have
more favorable comments than the competition. I spent at least an hour
searching and could not find a better center insulator unless I fabricate my
own. This is for a temporary contest expedition antenna so as long as it is
electrically secure it should work fine. I ordered one this afternoon.

I use this one:

This is electrically quite nice, but needs serious strain relief if you're
putting much stress on it (heavy coax, a long run between supports, trees
that sway in the wind). When I've used them, I've added an egg insulator
above this one, clamped each conductor to secure it mechanically, then
looped the conductor down to the contacts, where I clamped them to the
contacts with copper split-bolt connectors. I also tied the two insulators
together with rigging rope.
