Adding a few thoughts to what others have said, and based on some
anecdotal experience: My towers are 50' to 110' from the shack and
located for what I could do within lot constraints for minimizing
pattern overlap for Asia and EU azimuths from my WWA QTH. For a
suburban location I think I hear fairly well, often better than my QRO
talks, probably because of noise at the other end, unless I encounter a
TV, switcher, or power line QRM at times. But a lower noise floor is
always better.
I bury all coax and control lines. They make good antennas if elevated
and chokes aren't 100%.
And use at least double shielded (premium foil plus braid) coax or
hardline. Only hardline approaches 100% shielding.
Likewise, I now mostly use DIN's. There is a lot to be learned from the
cell business re connectors, grounding, waterproofing, and PIM.
If possible, I run coax and control lines inside the tower, it is a free
Faraday shield. My crankup with the 9917 coax hanging outside in the
air is noisier than the fixed tower with the hardline coax all inside.
Control lines that go near antennas can be a source of noise. My soon
project is to filter/choke my SteppIR control lines with that in mind.
I prefer antennas with minor high angle lobes at the height I install
them. I think it is better to sacrifice a db of gain for a better
pattern. I've modeled a 6L 17m extensively and the "handbook" design
can be substantially improved in this regard.
A walk about with my PL660 Tecsun radio was informative about noise
sources to be tamed.
I'm also adding a loop receive antenna for sharp nulls of point noise
sources.

Guys,
I'm wondering if some of you locate your tower(s) away from the shack for
the single purpose of minimizing man made noises? I have K9YC's material
on reducing man made noises but I haven't had a lot of success. I'll soon
be constructing a new tower and am wondering if it's worth placing the tower
a 100' from the shack in hopes of reducing man made noises?
Thanks & 73,
