OTOH, there's pretty significant logistics issues with running BIG
low loss not so flexible coax, and unless the coax is surplus, it
could be pretty expensive (esp with connectors, etc.). It could well
be that it's cheaper to use smaller coax and spend the money on the
amp, as long as the powers are reasonable.
In the broadcast world with 50kW transmitters, it's worth it to buy
big low loss coax. But if you were thinking in the 100 Watt class,
where amps are a few hundred dollars, the trade might be the other way.
Of course, there's the whole lightning issue, too., but a direct hit
might take out all that expensive coax, too.
There are LOTS of commercial installations with amps sitting up next
to the antenna, so the reliability issue can be solved, it might be
pricey though.
