Well now,
Back in 2000, the UK went down the same route Loran closure, and
destroyed all the Loran sites, and sold the land back to the farmers
etc.....then, so I am told, the military said that the GPS system was not
"robust" enough, and susceptible to "jamming" and set up some wide spread
demonstrations to prove it....the outcome....lots of "waffle" from
politicians who made the closure decision, and then further technical trials
etc.
The final outcome is that Loran was reintroduced but on 100kHz and
went operational, in the UK from January 2008. Of course all the original
transmitter sites had been sold off.....all the masts felled for scrap, and
probably the copper wire ground mats torn up by the farmers, again for scrap
value.....yet more public money wasted by the authorities, in the
acquisition of new sites and the provision of new facilities/equipment
etc......
Where will all the waste of effort and materials end?
Sincerely, John G3JVC.

Really sad.
Now in just a few years after we've gone completely to GPS for
navigation, eliminated ground based nav, AND are approaching a new
sunspot cycle high remember that airliner you're sitting in will have no
backup nav system in case of a solar storm. <sigh>
