Hi John,
  I would think that 12 " ought to be just fine for direct burial of cable.
I'm not sure if the LMR series of cables are "direct burial" but 1/2" heliax
and above are. 73 Roy Lincoln WA4DOU
 p.s. mine will only be 8"
