Th amount of salt that it would take to make the ground rod effective would not 
necessarily have an impact on groundwater.  It may effect your XYL's roses but 
not your groundwater.  By the time the salt reached the water table, it would 
be dilluted to a point where it would not have any impact.  Plus, the salt 
would most likely bind with clay-like particulates in your soil before it went 
any lower (soil dependant).  Remember- the solution to pollution is dillution.

Doesn't putting salt in the soil contaminate it so nothing will grow
there?  Does it seep into the water table?

If so, it does not seem very environmentally friendly to me. Does the
EPA have a stand on this?
