Bill, you may be correct, I guess there needs to be some way to keep water out
of the back side of the SO-239 and a molded blob of plastic would do that. If
you get a chance check your feedline with an ohm meter to see if the antenna is

If I am correct it is just a pass-through to connect the positive side
of the transmission line to the radiator. The bottom connects to an aluminum
bracket to the mounting base which gets grounded and the top is connected to an
aluminum bracket on the bottom section of the vertical radiator. I have an
AP8A and I'm sure that is all it is. I'm curious so I'll go check mine and see
what I can find.

I just obtained an old AP8 which was broken off at the base. There is
a round black plastic blob directly above and connected to the center pin of
the SO-239 feed point connector. I have reviewed the manual for the AP8 and
that item does not appear in the parts list. My educated guess is that it is an
RF Choke used to keep the vertical grounded to eliminate static charge. It
might also be shunt inductance for feed point impedance matching. Can anyone
confirm my suspicions? I doubt a replacement part is available so I will
