I have used the 17 gauge aluminum for an OCF dipole.  It had no problem
holding the balun with RG8X dangling, but the center was definitely lower
than the ends!  I got the identical reel of wire at Lowe's for $16.99.
 (Lowes item # 92692)

Thanks to Grant for the kencove.com link - lots of interesting and useful
products there.
