Hub City touts their helical gear units, at 90+% efficiency vs 60% for
worms.
I don't know about their resistance to back driving, but at 50-60:1, it
wouldn't take much of a brake...

We've used exposed worm gears (88:1) successfully for many years on a
tower trailer. It does require lubricant and should be replaced after ten
years of use but they do work well.

I know we can buy them and that they “work†somewhat as advertized,
but I’ve never seen a serious worm gear application that didn’t
involve
Running in an oil bath in a closed housing.
In that environment, I’d guess one could get some hydrodynamic oiling,
greatly reducing friction and wear.
Now to find ham priced reducers! off to the jukyard.
