We have mostly changed over from products with DEET, to Picardin.  It
is supposed to be much less harmful to humans than DEET is, and it
doesn't destroy plastics, clothing, etc. like DEET does.

But as noted, it is only a partial measure; you still need to watch
where you go, dress appropriately, check for ticks, shower, and throw
all your clothing into the dryer after possible contact.
