Exactly right Bob, and there is a-l-w-a-y-s somewhere on the
planet where you are S1 ( I am S1 in more places than
most!), which is why ( especially in contests) that every dB
counts.

The more interesting question is: how much more every dB in
the antenna matters compared to say the PA or the rx front
end. I think we all know that it's quite a lot.

1 db when you're already 40 over 9 makes no difference.  If
you're only S1
then 1 db is valuable.  It's the ratio that matters.
