I seem to remember reading that if no more than 3 strands are broken
don't worry, I have never replaced my cable in 20 years and it still
looks good, I do check it completely every year to make sure and use the
correct lubricant.

All,

How often should the cable be replaced on a crank-up? I was always told
that if there are no broken strands or rust, the cable is fine. On the
other hand, some say it should be replaced every two to three years due
to metal fatigue regardless of it's appearance.

Thanks..
