Hi Kevin:
What you're seeing is the difference between PEAK and AVERAGE
power. On SSB, the difference can vary but is typically
between 20% to 40% of the peak power. This
varies depending on the characteristics of your voice,
microphone and level of speech compression in the tranmsitter.
This is perfectly normal. Since the standard Bird 43 is an
average reading meter, to accurately measure peak power, you
need to get the Bird peak reading modification for
your 43 watt meter.
