Dave's reference to the Smith Chart is apt for many problems. Although
the Smith Chart can be used for some problems with a little rote-memorized
procedure, it becomes much more useful if it is understood--that is, if
transmission lines are understood--and that means a little review of high
school algrebra along with the typical transmission line equations.
The best short treatment I have encountered is Caron's <Antenna Impedance
Matching> published by ARRL, which provides goos background into all the
chart features along with many fully worked examples. Smith's original
book is available from Noble Publishing, for those interested in the
inventor's account (at a higher price, however). The Smith Chart is one
of the most enduring paper computers ever developed. Wes Hayward's
Microsmith is an excellent computer implementation.
Just in case some need to leave notes to the family for stocking stuffers.
