It's been 40+ years since I worked on the program but my recollection is that the wire on the TOW missile was under ten mils, including the insulation.

I have a number of spools of AWG40 wire in copper and aluminum. That's about 3 mil diameter. (AWG 10= 100 mil, AWG30=10 mil, etc.)

I have no doubt one can get arbitrarily long pieces of wire 1 mil in diameter these days.

Of course, 1 mil is small enough that you can't really see it at any distance more than a few inches. It's a pain to work with unless you have magnification. Standard visual acuity tests are set to 1 arc minute (that's the size of the gap between the arms of the E on an eye chart at standard distance). 1 arc min is about 0.3 milliradian (or a distance of 30 cm at a distance of 1 km), or here, 3.44 inches for 1 mil
