I have seen this bastardized into "Hee Hee" in reference to the way it
is done on CW so many times, especially by Novices that put a rather
wide spacing between the two 'dits' on the I.
I'd like to comment on this, tho. In my four+ decades of of CW operation,
I've never thought of it as being ridiculous. I accepted it as being one
of the vagaries and peculiarities of CW. I always took it (albeit it was
possibly mistaken on my part) as the common usage form of an exclamation
point. Invariably it seemed that when someone used it, it was in the form
of an exclamation marker. Indeed, I used it that way (and still do) to
emphasize some point I was trying to make rather than use the usual (and
usually unknown) di di di dah dit for an exclamation point.
Does anyone know the true background of "HI"????
