The _National Contest Journal_ (NCJ) has some great VHF contesting
articles in the Jul/Aug 2004 issue, including:
"How I Built a Rover" by K1KC
"The VHF QRP Portable Category" by W9GKA
"More on the Moxon 6 Meter Antenna" by N0JK
Plus some not-VHF-specific but still very relevant articles:
"Voice Techniques for Contesters" by K4ZA
"N3FJP Contesting Software - Comments from K3MD" by K3MD
"Getting More Power to the Antenna, Cheaply!" by K5AF
"An Open Letter: The Ethics of Contesting" by OH1VR/AE6PP
I especially enjoyed W9GKA's article about the QRP Portable category.
He analyzed all the contest submissions ever made to the category in the
three main ARRL VHF contests. Among his conclusions: "Roughly two-thirds
of all QRP operators attempt the category only one time." The article
also has graphs showing the trends since 1986 in total points, total ops,
and total logs entered. Very interesting.
Your local ham radio store may have the NCJ on their magazine rack.
If not, ask around the local contest club to see if anyone has a copy you
can borrow. Or email circulation@arrl.org about getting it as a back issue.
