As to the original post, IRC (internet relay chat) is very low-bandwidth (text 
only, but with some keep-alive ping traffic) and has easy-to-use clients on 
almost any platform.  If you really want a nothing-but-text quick-and-dirty 
reflector, I can code something up.

As of a few years ago in the US, satellite internet providers wouldn't allow 
self-installed dishes, so that may be something to confirm.  Of course if 
someone in QC lets you borrow theirs, maybe nobody would notice. :P

By the way, don't forget about HF APRS, on 30m.  I would think being picked up 
by at least one station ought to be possible (?).  Though it would require a 
30m rig of some sort, and another antenna, thus more baggage/inconvenience/cost.
