No, I don't use the ALC line between the radio and amp.  I think I have 
found the problem.  When I reconnected the radio to the amp, I inadvertently 
used the PTT jack on the back to key up the amp instead of the TX GND jack. 
As soon as I corrected the mistake the problem went away.  How dumb is that?
