When my DSP unit packed up on the 1000MP it turned out to be the surface 
mount electrolytic capacitors had dried out! Think there are 8 of them. All 
replaced and no further problems. My symptoms were similar to what you have 
experienced.
PCB gets quite hot sealed in that tin screening box plus there is a voltage 
regulator in there generating heat!
