It's not so much the idle HV but what the voltage drop is between ZSAC (key down but no signal from exciter) and full output - if it drops 500V or more you should connect it to 220VAC. A 500V drop in

Need to clarify this - tune for max output at 20W, then tune for max output at 60W. If you try to tune the amp with 60W and the load and plate controls (and/or band switch) are not in the right place

Question: I was given a homebrew single 3-400Z amplifier which works but I noticed with ZSAC the top of the glass envelope has a very faint blue hue when looking across the top of the tube envelope.

It's very old - 1966 vintage - I think someone rode it hard and put it away wet as with simple keydown ZSAC it glows brightly in that one spot. The newer tube to the right is equal in its appearance

My unasked for opinion: I have a 45' run of #10-3 to feed my Drake L4 220VAC - that's all it feeds. At most the plate voltage drops 250 VDC according to the meter between resting idle and full power
