- I think pre-MFJ Ameritron amps were not as well built as post-MFJ Ameritron amps. The AL-84 is plastic and uses sweep tubes and the original AL-80 is junk compared to the "A" or "B" models. While it'

- Yeah, I meant only a lid would run so little power. ;) With an 8K, you can be heard on all 5 channels at once... Fewer missed contacts that way. 73, Scott, N9AA ______________________________________

- Why don't you think it's a good idea? The amp will run cooler, the tubes will last longer and the performance will be about the same. What's not to like? 73, Scott, N9AA _____________________________

- My bad. My amp SEEMS to run cooler because it's not run up against the max ratings og the tube. There is no reason that it would actually run cooler. Thanks for pointing out my error. 73, Scott, N9AA

- The AL-811H runs about 1600-1800 volts HV, not 1400, which is why it's not a bad idea to run the 572Bs in that amp. While the cost difference seems substantial, you'll probably never have to replace

- Joe, The AL-811h is what it is, bad design or not. I'm not here to debate that. I live in this world, not the best of all possible worlds, as Voltaire might say. Given that, the 572Bs, even the gener

- Joe, The original question wasn't whether it's a good idea to replace 811As with 572Bs in general, it was whether it's OK to replace the 811A with the 572B in an AMERITRON amp, which most of us have
