- Ed, - There is no reason why you have to troubleshoot the path with the amp even plugged in. A good quality multimeter will do the job with the line (mains for you people across the water) plug out.

- Had the same problem in a few different models of similar amplifiers. Turns out to be a power supply electrolytic failing after an amount of "on time." Power off and the faulty cap un shorts itself.
