- One day when I switched from CW to SSB mode on my Clipperton-L it blew the fuse with a good bang. Why switch? Higher plate volts, lower grid current. Don't have to play the 1 kw input game any more.

- Why would you get a surge ? Every thing has been "on", the caps are charged most of the way, you are just going up a couple hundred volts. The amp groans quite a bit when first powered on of course.

- Do you know what the voltage at the pins measure now? Unless you have a variac in line, I bet it's not 5.000. Most of the old transformers in my junk box are 115v. My line voltage, as we speak is 121
