This post is very long, so skip it if you don't want to dive deeply into the issue of 87A repairs. Hopefully, the information will be useful to some of you. The reliability and "repairability" of 87A

Sounds like they have a very limited supply of the AlphaMax PALS and want to save them for amps sent to them for service, as opposed to making them available to owners of old 87As that want to upgrad

I wonder if the 9500's firmware limit is a hangover from the 87A firmware, which has the same limit. My recollection is that it was set low to protect the PIN diodes. Of course the 9500 doesn't have

That's a good strategy if you only have one antenna per band, but not if, like me, you have multiple antennas and antenna combinations per band. That's why I leave AlphaMax on all the time. It's a ne

I think you mean manually select the antenna. The 2000A has that drawback, too -- the user has to manually select the antenna. That's one reason I wrote my own antenna switching software, which passe

Some additional points: - You may not be able to see evidence of arcing until you remove the choke. - You may need to replace (rewind) the coil. Just count the turns and use the same gauge/type of wi

I decided not to remove the T/R board. Instead, I cut L1 off the board, leaving about a quarter inch of the wire ends soldered to the PCB. Then I crimped those leads to the ends of the new winding an

This one is a long-shot, but are you sure the amp doesn't have bad tuning parameters? It's conceivable that the user tuning parameters for 20m were for a non-resonant antenna or perhaps got corrupted

One of the known causes of TX pin diode failure is arcing of L1 on the TR board. In older models, the rubber insulating pad under the coil disintegrates over time, allowing exposed parts of the wire
